Have at ye!ДЄnd for the record, I didn't know what the philosopher's stone was when I first bought the book (except in the psychedelic mushroom meaning of the word). And damn, if a simple name change can make more people read the book, then why the hell not change it? The Harry Potter thing just had to do with that fact that most people here wouldn't understand the 'Philosophers Stone' reference. In The Golden Compass, there is a clear difference between good and evil. Over the course of the book, Lyra goes from being an amoral child to a very moral young adult.

It'll be interesting to find out what happens in the third movie (I assume this is a trilogy as the footage shown looked like it was entirely from the 1st book), as there is content in the third book that has potential to make Christian communities somewhat antsy. What I love about the books is that it starts off fairly small, with a some conspiracy of kidnapped children, and then gets bigger delving into scientific theory, and finally in the third book gets even huger delving into religeous theory.

Why do American releases so often have name changes its like the publishers don't think the public will 'get' it if they don't change the name of something vaguely abstract to something simple and digestable. In my op, 'Northern Lights' is a much better title for a book than 'The Golden Compass' - I mean, the althiometer isn't even a compass, its an althiometer! It is perhaps described a handful of the times in the book as 'resembling a golden compass' but.gah.
